Yellowcard

For my birthday, I got two tickets to see my favorite band: Yellowcard! Yellowcard goes waaaaaaaaaay back with Amber and me. Right after we got married, Yellowcard came to the University of Utah for a free show and we went. I had heard some Yellowcard before, but I fell in love with them that night. We went to an acoustic show of theirs a few years later when Amber was pregnant with Jeremy and they didn't disappoint. Shortly after that, they took a break and went on an indefinite hiatus...

Well, Yellowcard is back and better than ever! Their new album, "When You're Through Thinking, Say Yes" is so tight and I was so stoked to see them again live! Well, this show was the best they'd ever done and we had such an incredible time! An hour and a half set of Yellowcard live? Uh, yes please! They are SO good live and if they came back tomorrow, I'd definitely go again! EPIC night with Amber! Thanks, Yellowcard. Again.

After the show, I went to Twitter to rave about how awesome it was and a few minutes later, got a pretty cool surprise! The violinist for the band tweeted me back. #BestBandEVER

Painting Merit Badge

Everything with the Scouts has been going great. The boys are having a great time and are earning lots of Merit Badges! As the week's Scout meeting approached, however, I was searching for an idea for what we could. That's when revelation hit: I needed to do a better job of involving the other members of the ward in the Scouting program.

We have so many people who do so many different things and it would be so great to have them come and teach the boys. I knew there was only one place to start: Jason. I called my buddy Jason Condie up and he delivered! In fact, he knocked it out of the park!

Jason is the manager at a Sherwin-Williams store in Salt Lake. Not only is he super cool and a great friend, but he knows a TON about paint. He brought so many things to show the boys and even brought us all SW t-shirts! We had a blast! Thanks, homie!

Even Jeremy got in on the fun!

Jeff and Maren's Wedding

Well, my best friend is married now. Not that I ever doubted him, because I didn't! But it's just so rad! Yep, Jeff and Maren are now official "Jeren"! Or "Meff"? Wait, maybe "Mr. and Mrs. Treft" is better. Anyway, here's how it went down...

Jeff and Maren met, Jeff went to China, Jeff came back, they went to Outdoor Nation, they smooched, they went Geocaching, they got engaged, and then they got married! Haha. (That's the abbreviated version of course.) It was a beautiful wedding and I couldn't be happier for them. They both were just glowing. Actually, Maren was more BEAMING than glowing haha! It was awesome.

Once again, it's been a big year for the family! Tim gets married to Tay, Ammon is born, and now Jeff and Maren are hitched. It's just great to see great things happening to great people. Congrats, you guys!

I now present Mr. and Mrs. Jeff Treft!!!

P.S. Can I just say that Maren is awesome?! She helped fulfill a promise I made to Jeff a loooooong time ago... and it was hilarious. And an inside joke. Thanks, Maren!

Bachelor Campout

Our homeboy Jeff is getting himself hitched and theBRIGADE decided we'd better get ourselves together for a bachelor party, which in tB terms means one thing: CAMPOUT! With all the wedding plans, various schedules, and commitments, we had a hard time finding a good weekend to go. In the end, we decided to just throw reason to the wind and go after the Priesthood Session of LDS General Conference.

Paul, Tim, Jeff, and I met up in white shirts and ties and enjoyed a fantastic Priesthood Sesh together. I still can't believe how tight our crew is. It's a big year for all of us, actually. Tim got married in June, I had the birth of our second child, Ammon, in August. Jeff is getting married in October, and Paul is receiving the Melchizedek Priesthood this month as well! Huge! It was just really cool to look down the row at the three closest and most trustworthy homies I have. It was a great experience to be there with these great men. Love these fellas!

After we'd been spiritually fed, we went back to my place and changed into our "business" clothes so we could go get lost for a few hours in the mountains! We decided to hit up Baer Canyon where I took the Scouts. It was a gorgeous night and it was great to be back together with the crew on the trail!

We ended up at the same camping spot that I stayed at with the Scouts and it was perfect. We all ate dinner up there and had plenty of candy and smores to feed most of Davis County. Haha. It was prime!

It was so warm that night that I slept on top of my sleeping bag! With the rain fly off, it was exquisite with a light, warm breeze blowing over us... until 1:00 a.m. when the rain started! Hahaha. It didn't last long, though. We had a great night!

Tim had to wake up early the next morning and hiked down by himself at 6:30 so he could make it into SLC for a Conference Sesh. We were up and going around 8:00 and enjoyed a nice hike down looking over the valley in the beautiful morning light.

Jake Turns 27...

One day, I woke up, and I had completed the 27 year of my life. Know what? It doesn't feel that much different. Haha. It sure was a great day, though! Here are some of the highlights:

Pre-birthday dinner, made with love by Amber!

As Troy from "Swamp People" would say: "Bigggg Aligatuh!!"

Post-zoo hangover!
For dinner that night, we went to Texas Roadhouse. There was a bit of a mix-up with our reservation, so the manager let us get any appetizers we wanted! Legit!  The food was great and the company was exquisite. Rob, being the good brother-in-law that he is, made sure to remind the waitress that it was my birthday before we left. That's when the brought out the "birthday saddle." I realized at that moment that the purpose of the birthday saddle was to EMBARRASS the birthday person. That's when I decided that instead of embarrassing myself, I'd embarrass everyone else! Many crotches have straddled that saddle, but I OWNED that ride!

After dinner, we went home to enjoy some cake and ice cream. It was superb. I'm pretty sure nobody was more excited for cake than Jeremy! That boy loves his chocolate cake!

Go Utes!

The night before my birthday, I was the last one to bed and as I went through the house, checking lights and doors and such, it just hit me: I'm SO lucky... SO blessed. I always knew this, of course, but it just hit me harder than it ever had before, especially when I got upstairs. I just sat in the boys' room and couldn't believe that they were ours. And then I went into the bedroom and saw Amber. She's better than I could ever hope for, much more than I deserve.

Thanks to everyone for the birthday wishes and for being a part of my life. Peace and love to all!

Baer Canyon With The Scouts

We had a wonderful Court of Honor with the boys in the Scout Troop earlier in the week. All the boys earned Merit Badges and it was so cool to see them dressed up and beaming from ear to ear as they received their awards. The boys have worked really hard and have done really well. I couldn't be more proud of them! To celebrate, we did what any good Scout Troop would do... We went camping that weekend!

We decided to go up to Baer Canyon which lies directly east of us up the mountain. It's close by, allows for a little backpacking in, albeit much less strenuous this time, and is beautiful this time of year with the changing colors of the leaves! This time I had 3 of the boys come and they were all super stoked to be going out again. We met at the church at 5:00 p.m., piled into the truck, and made our way up to the trail head.

The hike up the trail was great. We were out of the hot sun this time and climbed our way up the well-worn trail in the shade of the trees. We passed several campsites before reaching the river where we crossed over the bridge. After about 20 minutes since we'd left the truck, we found our spot! It was just off the trail, but surrounded by boulders and trees with several spots to pitch a tent or make a shelter. We took off our packs and set up camp. It wasn't long before we had a fire going and dinner was served!

After we finished dinner, we were sitting around the fire as the daylight was fading when we had an unexpected visitor... A grungy looking guy in his late teens or early 20's staggered up the trail and began coming into our camp. I called out to him and he stopped and said: "Oh. Are you guys camping here?" (I thought the tent was a dead giveaway.) "Yes, we are," I replied. He started scanning the area again and looking closely at the boys and that's when I got that eerie feeling again. "Do you need help or something?" I asked pointedly. He stepped back a few steps and put his hands up as he replied, "Oh no no no! No, man, I was just, uh, looking around and stuff. Naw we're good, man..." I heard someone yelling further down the trail and he backed away further and began calling to his buddy. He wasn't moving quick enough for my liking and I still felt eerie about the situation so I reached into my pocket and clicked open my knife. I was turning around to speak to the boys when I heard three other clicks before I could say a word. Each one of the boys had their knives out and said, "Don't worry, we're ready!" Haha! These boys are so freaking rad! I don't know why we keep getting creepy kooks wandering up on us while we're camping. To be honest, it's really starting to bug me. This kid and his buddy were clearly coming up to use drugs and drink. They moved onto some rocks a short distance away and we watched them through the bushes until they finally left a short time later.

As the sun went down, we spent the rest of the evening going over Merit Badges and were able to finish 3 for the three boys as well as go over several others. I'd say it was a pretty successful evening! I decided to head for my bag around 10:00 and was drifting away at 10:30. I'm pretty sure the boys barely slept at all! I woke up at midnight and heard them talking and laughing. I rolled over just after 2:00 a.m. and heard them laughing. I woke up at 4:00 a.m. and heard them singing "Do, Re, Mi, Fa, So, La, Te, Do!" and a stirring rendition of "The Devil Went Down to Georgia." Oh, and yes, they were laughing. I woke up at 6:00 a.m. and yep, you guessed it... Still laughing! When they finally emerged from the tent around 7:30, I asked them in a very serious voice who invited the girls into camp. They looked at each other with puzzled expressions and answered assuredly that nobody had. I said: "Well, I woke up several times last night and kept hearing girls giggling and laughing!" Hahahahahaha. We all had a good chuckle from that one. Then we ate breakfast. Eggs, sausage, and pancakes. Legit!

After breakfast, the boys went exploring and it wasn't long before they were looking for wild edibles to eat. Logically, they decided they wanted to eat cactus. (Hahahahahahahahaha!) Soon, the 3 clicks were heard again as they brandished their blades and went to work collecting cacti. They actually gathered a good amount of the stuff when they brought it all back to camp. Now the real work began, however, as they had to remove all of the spines. It was a lot of work for a very small yield, but in the end, they all had some "warm cucumber" in their mouths. They weren't too impressed with the taste, but now they can say they ate cactus. As expected, the cactus foraging wasn't without injury. One of the boys somehow got a spine in his lip...

After a little first aid, we packed up our gear, hoisted our packs, and headed back down the trail. We made good time on the way down and so we did a bit of exploring near the trail head. We didn't find any treasure, but we did find a cool culvert to take pictures in!

We had a great camp out! These guys are so rad! I love my troop and I'm so lucky to be their Scoutmaster...
